    LOCATION

    Light, airy studio in charming port village

    • Coup de Cape is set in beautiful Kalk Bay, a short distance from the Cape Town city bowl & near several other exciting places: including the naval yards of Simon's Town & the world-renowned Cape Point.
    • Kalk Bay boasts sandy beaches & two tidal pools as well as many excellent restaurants & coffee spots.
    • The outdoors is easily accessible, by foot, bicycle & car.
    • Cape Town, the Mother City, is known for its creativity. This may - at least in part - be attributed to the unique energies emanating from the confluence of the Atlantic & Indian Oceans.

    FACILITIES & SCHEDULE

    Outstanding studio space in an inspiring destination

    • The spacious Forge studio is situated in a quiet area that hasn't yet been gentrified & transformed into a tourist trap!
    • Coffee & tea are available in the studio throughout the day. A kitchenette with microwave oven is available on the premises.
    • The studio is in close proximity to many restaurants, coffee shops, cafés & takeaways.

    • The atmosphere is easy-going & a typical weekday starts at 9:00 in the studio. We break for lunch between 12:30 & 1:30 pm & continue till 5 pm.
    • Residents are welcome to use studios after hours (when there are no Yoga classes) & on Saturdays, but without the assistance of Katherine or our professional resident technician, Alistair.
    • Core studio values are creativity, friendship, kindness, respect, humour, growth, cleanliness & a positive attitude!

    YOGA

    Two classes per week by a professional Yoga instructor

    • Ceramics Residency participants will only pay R400 for 4 classes, as opposed to the regular rate of R560.
    • Classes are suitable for all levels of yoga.
    • Our instructor, Monique has been practising yoga for 9 years & teaches the Iyengar style of yoga. Her classes focus on alignment & breathing & enable participants to find freedom & joy in yoga.

    RECREATION

    Outstanding natural & cultural heritage

    • The program has been designed such that you have can make the most of the residency and facilities, and work on Saturdays, if desired.
    • Sundays are free to explore this beautiful area at your own pace.
    • While it is Autumn, intrepid swimmers will enjoy the Dalebrook Tidal Pool, located a stone's throw from The Forge.
    • Being located a short walk from central Kalk Bay, why not explore the village? You are sure to find an eclectic shop or eatery that will pique your interest!
    • The spectacular natural scenery of the Cape Peninsula National Park is a gem for hikers and nature lovers.
    • Cape Town's rich cultural scene includes historical Winelands, the infamous Robben Island, trendy urban markets, amazing museums, regenerated arts precincts,  & unique local architecture.

    THE FUTURE

    Ongoing possibilities of extending your practice

    • This 2-week residency-workshop is the first of an ongoing series.
    • A second workshop will be held in 2021 to allow participants the benefit of developing their practice between workshops.
    • In the second workshop, we focus on contemporary installation practices & innovative displays of your new work.

  • Katherine Glenday

    Leading South African Artist

    Katherine's art practice includes ceramics, sound, & painting. She has a BA (Honours), from the University of Cape Town & BFA from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

    • Participants get a private hour-long Bonus Individual Creative Consultation (BICC) mentoring with Dr Wendy Gers, in which you can work on specific challenges facing your practice.
    • Participants will receive a Personalised Artistic References Dossier (PARD) that has been researched & compiled for your art practice. It contains artistic references that are relevant to their practice, & are aimed at enriching & extending your oeuvre.
